What's it all about?

Thinking of a career in tech or at the start of one now? We've got a panel line up of industry professionals ready to share their story and answer questions about getting into and progressing your career in the tech industry - from high school students to new grads looking at how to move up to the next level, and all the in-betweens.

Facilitated by LawVu intern Ben Hollier, here is your chance to ask any industry questions of the people who review CVs and are the ones normally asking the questions in the interviews! All from LawVu, we have Sarah Webb - Chief Operating Officer, Dr Kat Hempstalk - VP of Data and Analytics, and Jason Vella - VP of Engineering.

We will be inviting all attendees to ask questions on the night or feel free to email your questions in prior to the event. Some examples of questions you can ask: what language/stack should I be focusing on to be job ready? How important are personal projects? Is it normal to have an unpaid internship? Can I negotiate my first salary? What's a code review?

LawVu is a Tauranga based legal tech start up, now with 3 offices in the CBD and over 70 staff spread out across NZ & the world - we're hiring!

Sarah Webb

Chief Operating Officer, LawVu

Sarah is the COO of LawVu, a legal tech business operating out of the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. With a 20+ year career in software engineering that started in London, she has worked for a range of start ups and large corporates, such as Amazon, across a range of sectors including education, retail and media. Sarah is passionate about information security and the part it now plays in every business. Conscious of the continued imbalance of diversity in the tech industries, Sarah is enthusiastic about sharing her story and educating young people on the choices available to them if they choose a STEM path early on in their career.

Jason Vella

VP of Engineering, LawVu

I have worked in four countries and various industries along an engineering path spanning nearly two decades. I specialised in high traffic distributed systems initially as an individual contributor and later as an architect and lead (but always a hands on coder). Not too long ago I realised I could achieve bigger and better things by leading and growing engineers and now solve the same problems on a larger scale without doing the typing. I am fortunate to work with an incredibly talented group of people and learn from my interactions with them each and every day.

Ben Hollier

Intern, LawVu

Recovering lawyer who's passionate about technology and how it can improve our lives. (Though it didn't start out this way!) I studied law and science at Auckland University and became a criminal lawyer. After a few years I ended up in the world of contract law. Only took a short time of repetitive contract reviews to realise there are computers that can do this faster and better than me. So I decided to learn how to code before they took my job! And now here I am...
