What's it all about?
Despite the very real need, there is a generally low understanding of digital accessibility in NZ. There is also a low level of compliance with the accessibility guidelines that are available. Recent research conducted by Access Advisors shows that 97.5% of the top 1000 homepages in New Zealand have some form of accessibility errors, making it difficult for people with disabilities to use. But the increasing pervasiveness of technology means that if we don't consider accessibility from the beginning, we are excluding a significant proportion of the population from using our services and buying our goods. There is also a strong push to get government to implement long awaited legislation that will make it illegal to have inaccessible websites, mobile apps, software etc. Now is the time to think about how to integrate accessibility into your development processes to connect for a better future.

Chandra has more than 20 years of experience in technology in NZ working for PulseData, in the US working for Siemens, and then in the UK working for the likes of Qualcomm, Vodafone and the BBC. Chandra returned home six years ago bringing a passion for helping people understand and implement digital accessibility and usability. She now runs digital accessibility consultancy, Access Advisors, with a mission to help raise awareness of digital accessibility in Aotearoa and help businesses remove barriers from their digital services.
